Chapter 7
Torn Between Love and Fear
Sarah is caught in a devastating dilemma. Her love for Alex clashes with the terrifying danger he represents. She must choose between confronting him or escaping his world.
The scent of rain-soaked earth and blooming jasmine, a fragrance Alex had once described as the smell of their first meeting, now clung to Sarah’s apartment like a shroud. It was a cruel mockery, this perfumed air, a constant reminder of the sweet beginning that had led to this bitter, suffocating end. She traced the rim of her teacup, the porcelain cool beneath her fingertips, a stark contrast to the heat that simmered in her chest. Every shadow in the room seemed to lengthen, to twist into the menacing shapes she’d seen that night in the alleyway, the night Alex had materialized from the darkness, his eyes hard, his voice a low, guttural command.
Maria’s words echoed in her mind, a frantic whisper against the deafening roar of Sarah’s own thoughts. “You have to get out, Sarah. Now. Before he does something… before you become collateral damage.” Collateral damage. The phrase felt heavy, alien, a term from a world Sarah had never imagined inhabiting, a world Alex, her Alex, the man who’d held her hand beneath starry skies and whispered promises of forever, was so undeniably a part of.
Her gaze drifted to the framed photograph on the mantelpiece, a candid shot of them laughing, heads thrown back, caught in a moment of pure, unadulterated joy. Alex’s arm was slung possessively around her shoulders, his smile easy, his eyes crinkling at the corners. Looking at it now, it felt like a carefully constructed illusion, a beautiful lie painted over a canvas of brutal truth. The gun. The wad of cash. The chilling efficiency with which he’d handled those men, his demeanor shifting from lover to something cold and dangerous in the blink of an eye. It wasn’t just a hobby, a side hustle, as she’d desperately tried to convince herself. This was his life. This was who he was.
