Sarah found herself pacing the length of her small apartment, the worn rug a familiar landscape beneath her anxious feet. The afternoon sun, usually a cheerful visitor, felt muted today, filtered through the blinds like a hesitant apology. She’d spent the morning replaying the events of the previous night, the image of Alex’s guarded expression, the hushed intensity of his voice, replaying in her mind like a broken record. It was a disquieting echo, a discordant note in the symphony of their romance that had, until now, felt so perfectly orchestrated.
She needed to talk. Not to Alex, not yet. The words felt too tangled in her throat, too fragile to be spoken aloud, lest they shatter completely. She needed Maria.
Her fingers trembled slightly as she dialed her best friend’s number. Maria, with her steady gaze and sensible advice, was the anchor in Sarah’s often turbulent emotional sea.
