The city lights, usually a comforting blanket of distant stars, felt like a thousand accusing eyes tonight. Sarah clutched the worn leather of her jacket tighter, the chill seeping not just through the fabric, but into her very bones. She’d followed him. The thought itself sent a tremor of guilt, a cold, sharp counterpoint to the warmth that had bloomed in her chest whenever Alex was near. But the unease, a tiny seed planted weeks ago, had finally sprouted, its tendrils now wrapping around her heart with a relentless grip.

He’d been so evasive, so charmingly vague about his “late nights” and “business trips.” The gun, the cash – they were fragments of a puzzle she couldn’t ignore any longer. And tonight, the puzzle pieces seemed to be assembling themselves in the most terrifying way imaginable.

She’d told Maria she was going for a late-night walk, a desperate attempt to shake off the gnawing suspicion. But her feet had carried her, almost of their own accord, towards the address Alex had once carelessly mentioned – a nondescript warehouse on the industrial outskirts of the city, a place that reeked of neglect and secrets. She’d parked her car a few blocks away, her heart hammering a frantic rhythm against her ribs, and crept through the shadows, the silence amplifying the sound of her own ragged breath.
