The scent of expensive leather and a faint, almost imperceptible trace of something metallic, like old coins, clung to Alex’s apartment, a scent Sarah had initially dismissed as the unique perfume of his world. Now, it felt less like an exotic fragrance and more like a warning. The discovery of the hidden compartment had lodged itself in her mind like a splinter, an unignorable irritant that festered with every passing hour. It wasn't just the money, though the sheer volume of crisp, untraceable bills had sent a tremor through her. It was the gun. Sleek, dark, and utterly out of place amidst the otherwise tasteful decor, it spoke of a life far removed from the romantic dinners and whispered sweet nothings.
Maria’s words echoed in her head, a constant, nagging refrain. "He's too good to be true, Sarah. Everyone's too good to be true." Sarah had brushed them off, blinded by the dazzling light of Alex’s attention, by the intoxicating feeling of finally being seen, truly seen. But now, the shadows were lengthening, and the light seemed to flicker precariously.
She started small, tentative steps into a world she barely understood. During one of Alex’s infrequent “business trips” – vague excursions he never elaborated on, always returning with a weary smile and a new, exquisite trinket for her – Sarah found herself drawn to his study. It was a room she’d only ever glimpsed, a sanctuary he’d kept mostly private. Alex had always been affectionate, almost possessive, of his personal space, and while she’d initially found it endearing, a sign of his deep feelings, now it felt… guarded.
