The air in the great hall of Eldoria Castle had grown thick with a miasma of unease. It clung to the tapestries depicting ancient victories, a phantom chill that had nothing to do with the draft from the high, arched windows. Lord Valerius, his smile as polished and as cold as the obsidian in his signet ring, moved through the assembled nobles like a predator in a flock of unsuspecting doves. He spoke in hushed tones, his voice a silken thread weaving tales of impending doom, of shadows gathering at the kingdom’s borders, of a royal line weakened by… well, by whatever unseen affliction he chose to invent that day.

His words, however, were not entirely without merit. The harvests had been lean for two seasons, a blight had touched the western farmlands, and whispers of strange, unsettling occurrences – livestock found drained of blood, unnaturally dark storms that seemed to birth from clear skies – had begun to circulate like wildfire. But Valerius did not merely report the growing fear; he cultivated it. He was a master of subtle suggestion, of planting seeds of doubt and watching them sprout into full-blown panic.

“The Queen,” he would murmur to a nervous baron, his brow furrowed with faux concern, “she seems… distracted. Perhaps the burden of leadership is proving too great. And the King, bless his soul, is so often lost in his studies. Who will guide us when the true darkness descends?”
