The weight of the revelation settled upon Anya like a shroud, heavy and suffocating. Queen Isolde. Her mother. The regal figure she had glimpsed in hushed whispers, a name synonymous with the distant, unattainable world of royalty, was the very woman who had cast her out. The knot of confusion in her stomach tightened, morphing into a bitter ache that spread through her chest. It wasn’t the abandonment itself that stung the most, but the reason for it – fear. A fear of a prophecy, a fear of her own flesh and blood, a fear of a mark that was not a curse, but a part of her very being.

Master Elara watched Anya, her ancient eyes, usually pools of calm wisdom, now clouded with a sorrow that mirrored the young woman’s own. She had seen this moment coming, had prepared Anya for the possibility, yet the raw pain on the girl’s face was a testament to the enduring power of maternal rejection. “Your mother… she was young,” Elara began, her voice a gentle murmur that struggled to cut through the thick silence. “And the weight of the crown, Anya, it presses down on one’s shoulders with a force few can truly withstand. Prophecies, especially those spoken in fear, can twist even the most loving heart into something unrecognizable.”

Anya’s gaze flickered, her thoughts a chaotic storm. She remembered the fleeting images from her fragmented dreams – a woman’s face, etched with a desperate anguish, her hands reaching out, then recoiling as if burned. Was that Isolde? Had that flicker of maternal instinct been real, or merely a cruel trick of memory? The mark on her skin, the swirling pattern that had been the source of so much scorn and ostracism, felt like a brand now, not of shame, but of a mother’s dread.
