The air in Dr. Reed’s office had always held a peculiar stillness, a hushed reverence for the unspoken. Today, however, it felt heavier, charged with an electricity that crackled beneath Eleanor’s skin. Sunlight, usually a cheerful intruder, seemed to filter through the blinds with a muted, almost mournful glow, casting long, distorted shadows across the plush rug. Eleanor sat opposite Dr. Reed, her hands clasped so tightly her knuckles were white. The worn leather of the armchair did little to soothe the frantic tremor in her own.

“You’ve been wrestling with this for a long time, Eleanor,” Dr. Reed’s voice was a soft balm, yet it carried the weight of undeniable truth. “This feeling… this certainty of him.”

Eleanor swallowed, the sound unnaturally loud in the quiet. “It’s more than a feeling, Evelyn. It’s a constant hum. Like a radio station I can’t quite tune out, even when it’s supposed to be off.” She’d spoken the words aloud before, in hushed tones during their sessions, but today, with the fragmented pieces of her investigation finally beginning to coalesce into a disturbing, breathtaking whole, they felt irrevocably real. The antique locket, the recurring scent of rain and old paper, the phantom touch on her arm when she was alone – they were no longer mere anomalies, but signposts. Signposts leading to a truth she had both desperately sought and fiercely feared.
