The cheers of the crowd were a distant echo, fading with each step Elara took away from the opulent gates of his family’s estate. The polished cobblestones, once a symbol of his lineage, now felt like stepping stones to an abyss. A two. The lowest of the low. A peasant’s rank. In the Kingdom of Cards, where every suit and every number dictated your worth, your place, your very destiny, being a two was a brand of shame. He clutched the worn leather pouch at his side, its meager contents a testament to his hasty departure – a stale bread roll, a waterskin, and the gnawing emptiness in his gut that had nothing to do with hunger.

He ran until his lungs burned and his legs ached, the manicured hedges of the royal district giving way to the wilder, untamed edges of the kingdom. Here, the air was thick with the scent of pine and damp earth, a welcome change from the perfumed halls he’d fled. He found himself in a dense copse of trees, their branches interlaced like a tangled deck of cards against the bruised twilight sky. He slumped against a rough-barked oak, the rough texture a stark contrast to the silken comfort he’d known. Tears, hot and stinging, finally spilled, blurring the already fading light. He was worthless. A mistake. A card that should never have been dealt.

Lost in his despair, he barely registered the low murmur of voices nearby, the clinking of metal, the rustle of cloaks. He froze, his heart leaping into his throat. Were they guards? Had his family sent someone to drag him back to the humiliation? He pressed himself further into the shadows, his small frame trembling. Then, the voices became clearer, laced with a grim determination that sent a different kind of shiver down his spine.
