Dante, Shella's loyal right-hand, notices the queen's distraction. He sees Mika as a dangerous weakness, a threat to their empire and Shella's formidable reputation.
Dante’s shadow fell across the polished mahogany of Shella’s office, a familiar presence that usually brought with it the crisp scent of unspoken agreements and cold, hard cash. But today, it carried a different weight, a subtle dissonance that pricked at Shella’s awareness. She didn’t look up from the ledger, her pen still, poised above a column of numbers that seemed suddenly less important than the tremor in her own heart.
“Shella,” Dante’s voice was a low rumble, devoid of its usual deference. It was the sound of a predator scenting weakness. “The shipment from Marseille is late.”
Shella finally lifted her gaze, her eyes, the colour of a stormy sea, narrowed. Dante stood there, a statue carved from granite and ambition, his arms crossed over his chest. He was her right hand, her most trusted lieutenant, a man who had bled for her, plotted for her, and understood the brutal calculus of their world better than anyone. But lately, he looked at her as if she were a foreigner in her own kingdom.
