The air in the city had grown thick with a despair that clung to everything like the dust motes dancing in the scant sunlight. Even the vibrant crimson of the market awnings seemed muted, the usual boisterous calls of vendors hushed to a murmur. I moved through it all like a ghost, my worn cloak pulled tight, my heart a constant, frantic drum against my ribs. Each face I passed was etched with a weariness that went deeper than mere fatigue; it was the soul-deep exhaustion of watching loved ones fade, of feeling utterly helpless.

My steps, however, were guided by a purpose that burned brighter than my fear. I had found a quiet alcove behind the old alchemist’s shop, a place forgotten by most, where the scent of dried herbs still lingered. My hands, usually so gentle with the delicate petals of my moonpetal blooms, now trembled as I mixed poultices and brewed teas. The magic, a warm thrum beneath my skin, responded to my touch, coaxing life back into wilting herbs, imbuing the concoctions with a potency that defied explanation. It was a dangerous dance, a tightrope walk over an abyss of discovery, but the sight of a child’s fever breaking, of a ragged breath deepening into a steady rhythm, was a reward that eclipsed all risk.
