Chapter 5
The Court's Twisted Design
The plague's true source is revealed: a magical imbalance orchestrated by a cunning court faction. Elara's rare healing magic, once feared, is now the kingdom's only hope for a cure.
The scent of wilting herbs clung to the air in my small, cluttered workshop, a stark contrast to the cloying perfume of the royal court that had recently invaded my quiet existence. I stirred a simmering poultice, the familiar warmth of the herbs a balm against the gnawing anxiety that had become my constant companion. The plague, a cruel, indiscriminate thief, had stolen too much from this city. It had stolen laughter from children, warmth from hearths, and a future from so many. My garden, usually a sanctuary of vibrant life, now felt like a silent witness to the kingdom’s suffering, its blossoms drooping with a sorrow that echoed my own.
Each night, under the cloak of a moonless sky, I ventured into the shadowed alleys and forgotten corners of the city. My heart ached with every fevered brow I cooled, every rasping breath I eased. It was a dangerous dance, this clandestine healing, a tightrope walk over a chasm of discovery. My lineage, tainted by whispers of forbidden magic, had taught me caution. He stood framed in the flickering lamplight, his presence commanding, his eyes sharp and assessing as they swept over the hushed scene. He was investigating, his gaze missing nothing, his suspicion a tangible thing that prickled the back of my neck. I’d seen him before, a fleeting glimpse in the marketplace, his bearing that of a man accustomed to authority. Now, his stern countenance was etched with a weariness that mirrored my own, yet his resolve burned brighter.
