Chapter 19
The Final Victim
In a desperate, final act of defiance, David reveals his ultimate plan: to make Angela the final victim, the symbolic culmination of his twisted tribute to Ridgeway. He has lured her to a remote location, a trap sprung from the depths of his psychosis. The hunter becomes the hunted in a harrowing showdown. Angela, injured and fighting for her life, must use every ounce of her resilience and intelligence to survive. The climax is a brutal fight against David, a desperate struggle against the darkness he embodies, with the ghosts of the Green River victims and her own mother watching.
The air hung thick and cloying, a damp, earthy perfume that clung to Angela’s skin like a shroud. Her head throbbed, a dull, persistent ache that mirrored the throbbing in her left arm. Blood, warm and viscous, had seeped through the makeshift bandage, staining the sleeve of her jacket a dark, ominous crimson. She tasted it, metallic and sharp, on her tongue. The remote logging road, choked with shadows and the skeletal fingers of fir trees, offered no comfort, only a suffocating embrace. This was it. The trap. The culmination.
David’s voice, a chillingly calm whisper, slithered through the oppressive silence. "You always were too persistent, Detective. Too determined. It’s a quality I admire, in a way. Reminds me of him."
Angela gritted her teeth, forcing herself to focus. Her gun, miraculously still clutched in her right hand, felt heavy, an anchor in the swirling chaos. She scanned the dense undergrowth, the twisted shapes of fallen logs, searching for any flicker of movement, any glint of malice. The game was over. This wasn't about clues anymore, or the ghosts of the past. This was about survival.
