Chapter 9
The Slump
Following the rough game, Alex enters a slump. His shots miss, his confidence wavers, and the joy he once felt seems to be fading under the immense pressure and fatigue.
The squeak of sneakers on polished wood, once a melody that vibrated through Alex’s very bones, now sounded like a discordant scraping. The roar of the crowd, a sound that had previously fueled him, felt distant, like a muffled echo from another life. Chapter eight’s bruising encounter, a game that had left him physically aching and mentally battered, had seeped into his very being, a shadow clinging to his once-effortless grace. He was in a slump, a deep, suffocating one, and the vibrant colors of his newfound basketball world had begun to fade into a dull, uniform gray.
Practices, which had once been a sanctuary, now felt like a trial. Coach Miller, his usually encouraging gaze now tinged with a quiet concern, would draw diagrams on the whiteboard, his voice a steady rumble. “Keep your wrist loose, Alex. Follow through. It’s all in the fundamentals.” But the fundamentals felt foreign, alien. The ball, which used to feel like an extension of his hand, now felt heavy, unwieldy. His shots, once a sure thing, kissed the rim with an infuriating regularity, then bounced away, mocking him. Sometimes they didn't even reach the hoop, clanging off the front iron with a dull thud that sent a fresh wave of shame through him.
He’d catch the subtle glances from his teammates. Mark, his usual competitive fire now banked, would offer a tight-lipped nod, a flicker of something that might have been pity, but Alex couldn’t be sure. It was easier to avoid eye contact, to retreat into himself, the quiet boy he’d been before this whirlwind of talent had swept him up. He’d always been good at fading into the background, at making himself small. Now, that instinct felt like a betrayal of the spotlight that had suddenly found him.
