Lina sat on the edge of her bed, the small button from Sparky pressed into her palm. It was warm, almost alive, as if it remembered the toy’s tiny heart. The house was quiet, but her thoughts were loud, tangled like a knot of yarn. She had searched every corner—under the sofa, behind the bookshelf, even in the dusty attic where old suitcases whispered of forgotten journeys. But Sparky was gone. And now, a new worry crept in, cold and sharp, like a splinter under her skin.

Her grandmother, Babcia Marta, had come to visit that afternoon. She sat in the kitchen with Lina’s mother, their voices low and serious. The kettle whistled once, then fell silent. Lina had heard words she didn’t understand—konstitucija, migracija, civilinę santuoką—like stones dropped into still water, rippling outward. And then, a name: Shudas. It hung in the air, heavy and sour.

Lina crept down the stairs, her bare feet silent on the wooden steps. The floorboards groaned under the rug, but no one noticed. She pressed her ear to the kitchen door. The wood was cool against her cheek. Through the crack, she saw Babcia Marta’s gnarled fingers wrapped around a teacup, steam curling like a ghost.
