The cavern hummed with afterglow. The clocks had struck midnight and kept striking, their chimes softening into a slow, golden resonance that pooled on the mosaic floor like spilled honey. Lina still held the silver snuffer, its metal cool against her palm, but the candles on the rainbow cake had relit themselves—tiny flames swaying in a breeze no one felt.
The First Toy stood at the center of the celebration, clay-dusted and dandelion-light, its eyes flickering with the memory of a child’s hands. It turned slowly, as if learning to see the world for the first time. “There is one more,” it said. Its voice rustled like dry leaves. “One who did not come with you. One who was lost before the clocks stopped.”
Sparky’s ears flattened. “We brought everyone from the workshop. All the dolls, the tin soldiers, the bunny with the missing button.”
