The air, once thick with the scent of stolen moments and whispered lies, now reeked of something fouler – fear. Four years had bled into one another, a kaleidoscope of dread painted with the harsh strokes of his temper. His hands, which had once traced the curve of my hip with a tenderness that felt like a fever dream, now landed with the brutal certainty of a hammer blow. Each bruise bloomed beneath my skin, a silent testament to the love that had curdled into a venomous dread. I learned to flinch before the blow, to anticipate the storm in his eyes, to shrink myself small in the corners of rooms where his rage could not quite reach.

Then, a new life stirred within me, a fragile flicker against the encroaching darkness. A son. My body, already weary from the weight of motherhood and the constant strain of his abuse, pulsed with a desperate hope. This tiny being, a testament to a love I no longer recognized, deserved more than the fractured existence I could offer. I cradled my swollen belly, whispering reassurances to the life growing within, promises of a world free from the shadows that had consumed me. But the shadows had a long reach.
