Samira and Amir descend into the heart of the covenant, where the woman reveals the true cost of being keeper. Samira must choose between eternal duty and a final, desperate act to break the cycle.
The stairs were endless. Each step echoed in the dark, a hollow sound that seemed to come from inside Samira’s own chest. Amir’s hand was cold in hers, but his grip was steady. The golden veins in the walls had faded to faint threads, barely enough to see the next step.
“How far down does this go?” Amir whispered.
“I don’t know.” Samira’s voice was thin, scraped dry. The emptiness inside her was a physical weight, pressing against her ribs. She had given up hope. She had felt it leave her body. Now there was only this descent, this duty she didn’t understand.
