Chapter 19
The woman reaches for Amir, and the blood covenant is sealed. Samira is bound as the keeper, and Amir is allowed to accompany her. The others escape to the surface. Samira and Amir enter the final gate chamber, where Samira must place her mark on a black disc, sacrificing her hope. The gate closes, but a new staircase descends into deeper darkness, and the woman's voice commands them to descend.
The woman’s fingers brushed Amir’s forehead. A thin line of blood beaded against his skin, bright against the golden light. Samira tried to rise, but her knees would not obey. The mark on her hand burned white, and the world tilted.
"No!" Liam lunged forward, but his body hit an invisible wall. He slammed his fists against it, the thuds muffled. "Get away from him!"
Marcus grabbed Liam’s arm. "It’s no use. Look."
