The figure stood on the water, black sludge dripping from its elongated limbs. Its faceless head tilted toward Samira, and the hum in the cavern deepened, pressing against her skull.
“One of you must stay,” it repeated, the words grinding like stone.
Liam stepped forward, his hand going to the knife at his belt. “Stay for what? You want us to just hand someone over?”
