The city hummed its familiar, relentless tune outside my office window. Below, a river of headlights flowed, each one a tiny story I couldn’t decipher. My own story, the one that had been so neatly charted, felt suddenly… smudged. Amelia Vance. The name echoed in the quiet space of my thoughts, a melody that refused to fade. I found myself replaying our brief, charged encounters, the way her eyes had crinkled at the corners when she’d laughed, the surprising depth of her insights when we’d spoken about the project. He was a whirlwind of energy, his face alight with a concentration that mirrored her own. I recognized the intensity in his brow, the slight frown of effort. It was a familiar expression, one I'd seen in the mirror during particularly challenging negotiations.
