Leo, perched on the armrest of the sofa, was meticulously arranging his collection of dinosaur figures, their plastic roars silenced by the quiet afternoon. Amelia, a book open on her lap, found her gaze drifting from the printed words to the gentle concentration on her son’s face. It was a familiar, comforting tableau, one that had become the bedrock of her world. Then, the chime of the doorbell broke the peaceful spell.

Ethan. He’d been coming by more frequently, his initial awkwardness around Leo gradually melting into a genuine, if still cautious, warmth. Today felt different, though. There was a subtle undercurrent of… purpose in his stride as he entered, a quiet confidence that always seemed to surround him, even in the relaxed setting of her home.

“Hi,” he said, his voice a low rumble that always sent a pleasant shiver down my spine. He offered a small smile, his eyes meeting mine for a brief, charged moment. He held a small, brightly wrapped package. “Leo, I brought you something.”
