The air in the secluded clearing felt thick, heavy with the unspoken words that hung between us like the mist from the nearby falls. My hand, still warm from Tariro’s touch, trembled slightly. The weight of two kingdoms, two warring families, pressed down on my chest, suffocating me.

“Tafara,” Tariro’s voice was a soft murmur, barely disturbing the quiet. Her eyes, those pools of deep, captivating brown, searched mine, mirroring the turmoil I knew raged within me. “We cannot hide forever.”

She was right, of course. The whispers had grown louder, the suspicious glances more frequent. My father, the Maseka King, a man whose stern gaze could freeze a river, had begun to question my prolonged absences, my distraction, the subtle shift in my demeanor. And Tariro, bless her courageous heart, lived under the watchful eye of her own kingdom, where any hint of favour towards Maseka would be met with swift and brutal judgment.
