Chapter 6
A Gruff Gatekeeper
Jona’s inquiries lead her to Gary Gonfeild, a man whose weathered face and gruff demeanor suggest he knows the land intimately. He’s a local figure, perhaps a landowner or a caretaker, who seems to hold a certain authority over the area. When Jona tentatively explains her aspirations, Gary is immediately dismissive. He scoffs at the idea of building a home in the wilderness, painting a grim picture of isolation and hardship. His skepticism is palpable, his words a blunt instrument that threatens to shatter Jona's fragile hope. This encounter is her first significant obstacle, a stark reminder that her dream might be met with resistance, and Gary Gonfeild stands as a formidable gatekeeper to her aspirations.
The air in Gary Gonfeild’s workshop hung thick with the scent of sawdust and something akin to dried pine needles, a familiar aroma that usually soothed Jona’s senses. Gary Gonfeild was a study in weathered resilience, his hands calloused and stained, his face a roadmap of deep-set lines etched by sun and time. His eyes, when they finally lifted to meet hers, were the color of a stormy sky, sharp and assessing.
“You the one asking about the old logging trails?” His voice was a low rumble, like stones shifting in a riverbed. It held no warmth, no invitation.
Jona swallowed, her throat suddenly dry. “Yes, sir. That’s me.” She tried to inject a note of confidence into her voice, but it came out thinner than she’d intended. “I… I was wondering about a particular clearing, deep in the woods. Off the main paths.”
