Chapter 8
A New Visage
With altered features and a fabricated identity, John prepares to enter the world of the Golds. The memory of Melissa is his shield and his sword.
The sterile white of the reclamation chamber clung to me like a shroud, a stark contrast to the familiar grit of the mines. It was a baptism of sorts, a violent shedding of my old skin. Lyra had overseen it all, her gaze a mixture of grim satisfaction and a flicker of something akin to pity. They had stripped away the calluses, smoothed the rough edges of my hands, and even altered the very shape of my face. A subtle reshaping, they called it, enough to pass, to blend into the gilded world that had so long denied my existence. My eyes, once the colour of Martian soil, now held a deeper, more unsettling hue, a shade that would not betray my origins. The scars, those proud badges of a life lived in the deep, were meticulously erased, leaving behind smooth, unblemished skin. It felt wrong, this erasing of myself, like a betrayal of the very life I had fought so hard to reclaim.
“Remember who you are, John,” Lyra’s voice, rough as slag, echoed in the chamber. “But more importantly, remember who you must become.” She held up a mirror, not one of polished chrome, but a dark, reflective surface that seemed to absorb the light. My reflection stared back, a stranger. The man in the mirror was taller, leaner, his posture subtly different, imbued with an arrogance that was foreign yet necessary. The Reds were taught to stoop, to shrink, to make themselves small. The Golds, I was learning, were taught to expand, to fill every space with their presence.
“He’s ready,” a voice chirped from behind me. A medic, I presumed, one of the few Reds Lyra trusted with these delicate procedures. They were part of the Anarchy too, their skills a weapon against the very system that deemed them expendable.
