Chapter 7
Forged in Fire
Intense physical and mental conditioning transforms John. His body is honed, his mind sharpened, and his rage is channeled into a potent weapon.
The pain was a constant, unwelcome companion, a searing fire that licked at my muscles, my bones, my very soul. Each sunrise, if you could call the dim, artificial glow of the training chambers a sunrise, brought with it a fresh wave of agony. Lyra’s methods were brutal, efficient, and utterly without mercy. I was on the mat, struggling to maintain a defensive posture against a trainer whose movements were fluid, almost predatory. My mind, still clinging to the familiar patterns of my old life, kept trying to analyze, to predict. But these Golds, and the rebels trained to fight them, moved with an instinct that transcended mere logic.
