The air in the chamber was thick with the cloying scent of exotic blossoms, a perfume so potent it felt like a physical weight against my lungs. It was a stark contrast to the recycled, mineral-tinged air I’d breathed for all my years in the mines. Here, in the opulent private quarters of Lord Vance, the very air seemed to hum with privilege. I stood, a shadow in borrowed silk, my heart a frantic drum against my ribs. My new skin, a carefully constructed facade of Gold normalcy, felt both too tight and impossibly flimsy.

Lord Vance reclined on a chaise lounge upholstered in a fabric that shimmered like captured moonlight, a goblet of ruby-red liquid held loosely in his hand. His eyes, the pale, almost translucent blue of a winter sky, scanned me with an unnerving intensity. He was a man carved from marble and ambition, his features sharp, his posture radiating an effortless authority that I was still learning to mimic.

“You performed admirably at the harvest festival, John,” he said, his voice a low, resonant purr. “Your… enthusiasm for the traditional dances was particularly noteworthy.”
