The air in Elias Vance’s private study was thick with the scent of aged synthetics and something vaguely floral, a perfume that spoke of ostentation and a life utterly alien to the grime and grit of the mines. Sunlight, filtered through polarized windows, cast long, sterile shadows across polished chrome surfaces and holographic displays that shimmered with incomprehensible data. I stood before Vance’s immense desk, my heart a drumbeat against my ribs, a frantic rhythm that I prayed my carefully constructed facade could conceal.
“You’ve been… efficient, John,” Vance said, his voice a low rumble that seemed to vibrate in the very bones of the room. He steepled his fingers, his eyes, the unsettling pale blue of a winter sky, fixed on me. “Your reports have been… surprisingly insightful. More so than I’ve come to expect from someone of your… background.”
The subtle jab, the almost imperceptible pause before “background,” was a familiar dance. He didn’t know I was a Red, not truly. He saw me as a promising, if uncouth, recruit, a potential asset to be molded and exploited. Lyra’s training, the nanites that had rewritten my very being, the years of forced smiles and calculated deference, had all led to this moment. I was no longer John the miner. I was… someone else. Someone who could walk in these gilded halls without flinching.
