The polished chrome of the observation deck reflected the artificial dawn, a cruel mockery of the sun I’d only ever seen in crude simulations. My reflection stared back, a stranger in familiar rags. They’d stripped away the grime, the calluses, the very essence of what it meant to be a Red. Now, a tailored tunic of deep sapphire clung to my frame, the fabric impossibly smooth against skin that no longer felt entirely my own. Lyra’s words echoed in my mind, a constant hum beneath the manufactured serenity of this gilded cage: “They see what they want to see, John. Play their game, and you’ll win.”
Winning. It felt like a distant star, a cold, unattainable light. But I was here, breathing air that didn’t taste of recycled desperation, walking halls that didn’t echo with the hollow clang of pickaxes. My new name, Kael, felt like a borrowed coat, ill-fitting but necessary. My past was a ghost I kept locked away, a phantom limb that sometimes throbbed with a phantom pain. Melissa. Her face, etched in the soft light of our shared memories, was the only true thing I carried with me into this labyrinth of deceit.
Elias Vance’s office was a testament to his station. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered a panoramic vista of the Golden City, a sprawling metropolis of impossibly tall spires and shimmering sky-bridges, all bathed in the perpetual, controlled glow of the terraforming engines. Vance himself reclined in a chair that seemed sculpted from pure light, a glass of amber liquid swirling in his hand. He was as I remembered him – sharp features, eyes like chips of ice, and a smile that never quite reached them.
