The air in Mr. Kazys’s study was thick with the scent of old paper and beeswax polish, a comforting aroma that always made Elara feel like she was stepping into a storybook. Sunlight streamed through the tall, arched windows, illuminating dust motes dancing like tiny fairies. Mr. Kazys, his face a roadmap of gentle wrinkles, sat behind his desk, his eyes twinkling behind his spectacles. Elara sat opposite him, her small hands clasped around the string of wooden beads. They felt warm against her skin, almost alive.

“So, Elara,” Mr. Kazys began, his voice a low rumble, “you believe these beads are more than just a pretty keepsake?”

Elara nodded, her heart thrumming a nervous rhythm against her ribs. “They… they glow sometimes, Mr. Kazys. And there are little pictures on them, or shapes. Not like normal carvings.” She hesitated, then, emboldened by his kind gaze, added softly, “Grandmother always said they were special.”
