Elara clutched the smooth, cool wooden beads, their familiar weight a small comfort against the nervous flutter in her stomach. The air in the old archive room, usually thick with the comforting scent of aged paper and dust motes dancing in the sunlight, felt charged with something else today – a prickle of anticipation, a whisper of unease. Mr. Kazys, his kind eyes crinkled at the corners, had set a task before her: to revisit the very spot where her grandmother had last spoken of the beads, to see if any echo of the past lingered, a tangible clue to the symbols that now danced in her mind’s eye.

The place her grandmother had described was a small, forgotten courtyard tucked away behind the grand facade of an old church, a place Elara had often passed but never truly explored. Sunlight, filtered through the leaves of an ancient linden tree, dappled the worn flagstones. A stone bench, softened by moss, sat beneath the tree, a silent sentinel. This was it. The air here felt different, quieter, as if holding its breath. Elara traced the rough surface of the bench, her fingers finding a small, almost invisible carving. It was a symbol she recognized from the beads, a delicate spiral that seemed to unfurl like a fern frond. Her heart gave a little leap.

As she knelt to examine the carving more closely, a shadow fell over her. Elara flinched, her hand instinctively going to the beads hidden beneath her sweater. A gruff voice, laced with an unexpected sharpness, broke the stillness. "What are you doing here, girl?"
