The air in Mr. Kazys’s study was thick with the comforting scent of aged paper and beeswax polish. Sunlight, dappled through the stained-glass window depicting St. Casimir, painted shifting patterns of ruby and sapphire across the worn Persian rug. Elara sat nestled in a velvet armchair, the smooth, cool wood of her grandmother’s beads resting in her palm. They had been quiet for days, their usual faint hum of warmth absent, leaving Elara with a prickle of unease. Had their magic faded? Had she imagined the glowing symbols, the cryptic whispers?
Mr. Kazys, his spectacles perched on the end of his nose, peered at a faded manuscript spread open on his desk. He hummed softly, a tune that seemed as old as the books surrounding them. Elara watched him, her heart a small, fluttering bird in her chest. She had brought the beads to him, her voice barely a whisper as she explained their recent silence. He had listened with his usual patient kindness, his eyes crinkling at the corners as if he held a private joke.
“Sometimes,” Mr. Kazys said, his voice a low rumble, “the clearest messages are written in the most unexpected places. Not always in glowing symbols, Elara, but in the very fabric of things.” He gestured vaguely around the room, as if the walls themselves held secrets.
