The air in Mr. Kazys's small, book-lined study felt even warmer than usual, thick with the scent of aged paper and something else, something vaguely spicy and comforting, like cinnamon. Elara sat on a worn velvet armchair, her fingers tracing the smooth, cool wood of the prayer beads nestled in her lap. They felt different now, not just a reminder of her grandmother, but a key, a whisper from a time she was only just beginning to understand. Mr. Kazys, his spectacles perched on the end of his nose, peered at her over a stack of brittle, leather-bound volumes.
"You say they glowed, Elara?" he asked, his voice a gentle rumble. "And you saw symbols?"
Elara nodded, her cheeks flushing. She still felt a tremor of disbelief whenever she thought about it. The faint, internal light, like fireflies caught in amber, and the strange, elegant markings that had briefly etched themselves onto the surface of the wood. "Yes, Mr. Kazys. Just for a moment. It was… beautiful. And a little frightening."
