Chapter 11
Whispers of Doubt
As the search continues, Elara faces moments of uncertainty. Is she capable of this task? The weight of history feels immense for one so young.
The weight of the wooden beads, cool and smooth against Elara’s palm, felt heavier than usual. It wasn't just their physical presence; it was the invisible burden of their secrets, the whispers of a past so grand and so hidden that it threatened to overwhelm her. Each symbol that had appeared, shimmering faintly on the polished surface of the wood, was a question mark, a puzzle piece that seemed too large for her small hands to assemble. She sat by her window, the late afternoon sun casting long shadows across her room, painting stripes of gold on the familiar rug. Vilnius, with its ancient spires and winding alleys, lay outside, a city steeped in stories, and now, it felt as though she herself was becoming a part of one.
Mr. Kazys had been wonderfully kind, his eyes crinkling at the corners when he spoke of the Jesuits, his voice a gentle current that carried her along through tales of learning and faith. He’d shown her old maps, pointed out where their grand college once stood, and explained the significance of certain symbols that had appeared on her beads. But even with his guidance, a knot of doubt tightened in Elara’s chest. He spoke of courage, of dedication, of a legacy that spanned generations, and she felt like a tiny boat adrift on a vast, historical ocean. Was she truly meant for this? Could she, Elara, who often found it hard to speak up in class, who preferred the quiet company of books and her own thoughts, truly be a part of something so profound?
The beads had pulsed with a new, more insistent glow last night. Not the gentle, curious shimmer of before, but a steady, warm light that seemed to emanate from deep within the wood. And with the light, new symbols had appeared, intricate and swirling, unlike anything Mr. Kazys had shown her. They spoke of vigilance, of a hidden watch, of something precious being shielded. Her grandmother’s face, serene and loving, flickered in her mind’s eye. She remembered the way her grandmother’s fingers would trace the beads, a silent prayer on her lips, a deep peace in her heart. Had her grandmother known? Had she understood the secrets held within this simple string of wood?
