Chapter 16
The Sunstone's Chamber
Elara finally reaches the chamber holding the celestial artifact, the Sunstone. It pulses with dormant energy, waiting for the touch of one who understands its purpose.
The air in the Sunstone's Chamber was thick with a silence that hummed, a resonant quietude that felt older than the stones themselves. Elara stepped across the threshold, her breath catching in her throat. This was it. Elder Maeve’s words, a tapestry woven with prophecy and urgency, echoed in her mind: “The Sunstone sleeps, Elara. It awaits the one whose heart remembers the sky’s song.”
The chamber was not grand, not in the way the villagers imagined grand things – with polished marble and glittering gold. Instead, it was carved from the very heart of the earth, its walls a deep, velvety obsidian that seemed to swallow the faint light filtering from the entrance. But at its center, resting on a pedestal of rough-hewn rock, was the Sunstone.
It wasn't a stone in the way Elara understood stones. It was more like a captured piece of dawn, a solidified sunset. It pulsed with an inner luminescence, a soft, golden light that ebbed and flowed like a gentle tide. Tiny motes of light, like captured fireflies, danced within its depths, swirling in intricate patterns that reminded Elara of the constellations she’d only seen in Maeve’s worn scrolls. It was beautiful, breathtakingly so, and yet, a profound sadness emanated from it, a longing for something lost.
