Chapter 5
Heartbreak's Test
Torn between the pain of betrayal and a faint flicker of hope, Mrs. Zingo prepares to confront Mr. Lott. Her spirit is tested, her resilience challenged by the harsh reality of his lies.
The air in the drawing-room, once thick with the scent of jasmine and shared laughter, now hung heavy, a stagnant pool reflecting the fractured light of a setting sun. A practiced smile, a silken veil that had once soothed her heart, now felt like a cruel mockery. He approached, his voice a low murmur, laced with an attempt at tenderness that did little to mask the underlying dissonance.
"My dearest Eleanor," he began, reaching for her hand. His touch, once a spark that ignited warmth, now felt like a cold, foreign thing. "You seem… pensive."
