The air within the shrine was a palpable thing, thick with the dust of ages and the scent of damp earth and something else… something ancient and corrupt. Ada’s lantern, a small, defiant beacon, cast wavering shadows that danced like specters across the rough-hewn stone walls. The stone itself, a monolith of forgotten worship, loomed before her, its surface etched with symbols that seemed to writhe and shift in the flickering light. It was here, in this forgotten place, that the whispers had finally coalesced, that the chilling voice had beckoned her.

And then, it had emerged. Not from the stone, not from the shadows, but from the very fabric of the darkness that clung to the shrine. It was a thing of pure absence, a sliver of night given form, impossibly tall and thin, its edges blurring as if it were perpetually dissolving back into the gloom. But its eyes… they were pinpricks of malevolent light, twin embers burning with a cold, predatory glow.

“I am Malice,” the voice, a dry rustle like dead leaves skittering across barren ground, had slithered into Ada’s ears. It was a voice devoid of warmth, of life, a voice that promised only decay. “I feed on fear and hatred. Every grudge, every act of jealousy, every betrayal strengthens me.”
