The acrid scent of burning sugar and spilled espresso still clung to the air of the café, a phantom memory of the morning's normalcy, now a stark contrast to the stark fear gripping Elara. Her hands trembled, not just from the chill seeping through the open door, but from the knot of dread tightening in her gut. Her mind screamed at her to turn back, to run, but her feet, as if possessed, carried her towards the elevators.
