The scent of old paper and worn leather filled Mr. Henderson’s small study, a comforting aroma that always made Leo feel a little closer to the sky. Sunlight, thick with dust motes dancing like tiny, unburdened spirits, streamed through the window, illuminating stacks of books that spoke of distant lands and daring adventures. Leo sat perched on the edge of a worn armchair, his gaze flicking between the framed photographs of vintage airplanes adorning the walls and the kind, crinkled face of Mr. Henderson. They were poring over a thick application form, its blank spaces a daunting expanse that Leo had been staring at for weeks.

“You’ve got the grades, Leo,” Mr. Henderson said, his voice a low rumble, like distant thunder. He tapped a finger on a section of the form. “And you’ve got the passion. That’s more than half the battle, you know.”

Leo nodded, a familiar knot of anxiety tightening in his chest. He’d been working odd jobs for months – mowing lawns, delivering groceries, helping Mrs. Gable with her garden – all to save what little he could for the application fees, the potential entrance exams, the sheer audacity of even trying. Each coin earned felt like a tiny victory, a step closer to the clouds, but the summit of flight school still loomed impossibly high.
