Chapter 9: The Lake and the Lure

Kaelen, Mira, Ignis, the Seer hatchling, and Grit journey to the mountain lake to find the fourth ember. They encounter a corrupted water spirit guarding the ember, and after a tense confrontation, they retrieve it. The Seer reveals a vision of the shadow woman gathering her forces for an attack on the sanctuary. The chapter ends with Kaelen realizing they must return home immediately to prepare for the assault.

The path to the lake was not a path. It was a suggestion, a faint ribbon of bare rock that zigzagged through scrub and boulder fields, as if the mountain had once considered being helpful and then changed its mind. Kaelen called it a trail; Mira called it an insult. Grit called it a perfect place to chase imaginary rabbits, which he did with great enthusiasm, vanishing into the undergrowth and reappearing ten feet ahead with a look that said, “You’re slow.”

Ignis flew overhead, a dark silhouette against the pale sky, occasionally dropping low enough to nudge Kaelen with his tail—a gesture that meant, “Keep moving, I’m bored.” The Seer hatchling, which Mira had taken to calling Luma for its moon-colored scales, slept in a sling against Kaelen’s chest. Every few minutes, it would chirp in its sleep, and Kaelen would feel a flicker of an image—a flash of purple light, a shadowy hand, a face half-hidden in darkness.

“It’s dreaming,” Mira said, watching the hatchling twitch. “My grandmother used to say Seer dragons dream of what will be, not what was.”
