The morning sun crept over the mountains like a bashful child, spilling golden light across the sanctuary. Kaelen woke to the sound of Grit snoring—a low, rumbling noise that vibrated through the floorboards. The dog lay sprawled on his back, all four paws in the air, looking less like a guardian hound and more like a furry corpse with a snoring problem.
“You’re a menace,” Kaelen murmured, sitting up.
Laura stirred beside him, her hair a tangled mess. She blinked, then smiled. “What time is it?”
