The morning after the feast, the sanctuary smelled of cold ash and spilled ale. Grit lay sprawled across the main hall's hearthstone, one leg twitching as he chased dream-rabbits. Aurum, the newly hatched First Dragon, perched on the edge of a table, pecking at a leftover berry tart with the fastidiousness of a royal food taster.
Kaelen stretched, his back popping in a way that suggested he was no longer twenty. Laura slept curled beside him, her hair tangling over her face. Ignis had draped himself across the cave's entrance, a warm, scaly door that kept out the morning chill.
It was peaceful. Almost suspiciously so.
