Chapter 16: The Heartfire's Light
Kaelen, Laura, Lyra, Ignis, and Grit march to the Veiled Peaks to confront the shadow woman. In the forge, Kaelen uses the ancient scale to purify the First Dragon egg while Laura leads a diversion. Grit reveals his full Guardian Hound abilities, and together they defeat the shadow woman, restoring peace. The sanctuary celebrates with a grand feast, and Kaelen embraces his role as Dragon Master.
The morning came cold, the sky a bruised purple. Kaelen stood at the sanctuary’s entrance, the iridescent scale warm against his chest. Ignis coiled beside him, steam curling from his nostrils. Laura checked her bow for the third time. Lyra leaned on her staff, her eyes fixed on the distant peaks. Grit was busy chasing his tail.
“We’re ready,” Laura said, but her voice wavered.
Kaelen nodded. He didn’t feel ready. He felt like a boy who’d borrowed a title he hadn’t earned. But the scale hummed, and Ignis’s presence anchored him. He thought of his parents, guardians who’d died to hide him. He thought of the egg, alone in darkness.
