Kaelen returns from the cavern with a dire warning. Lyra reveals her secret past as a dragon rider and the location of the shadow's lair, while Grit uncovers a hidden ally in the mountains.
The torch sputtered as they emerged from the tunnel, its flame catching the mist from the waterfall. Kaelen's hands were still trembling, though he'd clamped them into fists the moment they stepped into the hidden chamber. Laura walked close behind him, her breath coming in short, sharp bursts. Ignis's tail dragged across the stone, leaving shallow grooves. Grit led the way, his head low, ears flat.
Mira met them at the entrance to the birthing room, her apron still dusted with flour. "You look like you've seen a ghost. Or worse—a burnt loaf."
"Worse," Kaelen said. He sat down heavily on a stone bench, his shoulders sagging. "The shadow woman. She has another egg."
