The days that followed the discovery of the eggs fell into a rhythm both tender and absurd. Kaelen woke each morning to the sound of Grit scratching at his door—which was not a door at all, but a leather curtain he’d hung to keep the dog from stealing his pillow. It didn’t work. Grit had learned to push it aside with his nose, then stand on Kaelen’s chest until he got up. This morning was no different.
“You’re not a rooster,” Kaelen mumbled, shoving the dog’s face away. “And I don’t have grain.”
Grit whined, then sneezed directly into Kaelen’s ear.
