In the aftermath of the battle, Kaelen and Laura explore the meaning of the scale key. Grit's unusual behavior leads them to a hidden cave behind a waterfall, where they discover a nest of dragon eggs guarded by an ancient ward. Dawn crept over the sanctuary like a timid guest, reluctant to disturb the quiet. The air still smelled of ash and iron, but the first rays of sunlight painted the stone walls in shades of gold and amber, softening the scars of battle. Kaelen stood at the main gate, watching the villagers stir. They moved slowly, tending to wounds, gathering debris, speaking in hushed tones. It was the sound of a community catching its breath.
Laura appeared beside him, a steaming cup of tea in each hand. She offered one, and he took it, their fingers brushing. “You’ve been up all night,” she said.
“So have you.”
