Chapter 9
Chapter 9: The Root System
The narrator, standing before the Sirius carving in Level Seven, feels the maze tighten around her as she confronts the deeper connection between herself and Sirijus — not just a girl and her dog, but a shared identity. The wall writings reveal more fragments in both her and her mother's handwriting, suggesting Sirijus was a mirror, a thing named to reflect something already inside the narrator. The maze becomes hostile, corridors narrowing and the temperature dropping, as if resisting this particular truth. The narrator discovers a root system beneath the stone — literal or metaphorical — connecting her to the dog star, and realizes the relationship wasn't companionship but something older and stranger: a recognition. The chapter ends with the maze shifting violently, the walls beginning to close, and the narrator trapped in a shrinking corridor with only the warm Sirius carving as an anchor.
Here's what nobody tells you about revelation: it's boring. The actual moment of understanding — the click, the lock turning, the thing you've been circling for years finally snapping into focus — isn't cinematic. There's no orchestra. No slow pan to your face with tears welling artistically. You just stand there, in a corridor made of your own psychology, feeling stupid for not having seen it sooner.
I stood there. I felt stupid.
My hand was still on the carving of Sirius, and the groove under my palm was still warm, and my mother's words were still hanging in the air like she'd spoken them instead of written them decades ago on paper so soft the corners had turned to cloth. Death dog sitijus are you theer. And my own handwriting, answering her across years neither of us had planned for: yesterday human was even stolt. Now megico post rural madness. A conversation in fragments. Two women writing on the same wall without knowing the other was there.
But that wasn't the revelation. I'd already processed that. That was last chapter's work. This chapter's work was worse.
