Chapter 8

Chapter 8: The Dog Star

The narrator discovers that Sirijus was named after Sirius, the Dog Star, and that her mother chose the name deliberately — connecting the dog's death to a cosmic framework of disappearance and return. A hidden passage in Level Seven reveals wall writings in both her mother's and her own handwriting, documenting the night of Sirijus's death from two perspectives. The narrator uncovers that her mother knew the truth about what happened that night — that the father's negligence caused Sirijus's death — and had silently carried that knowledge alongside her own grief, writing it in code among her collected words.

I should have known the maze wasn't finished with me.

I really should have. If this were a proper story with a proper structure, Chapter Seven would have been the curtain call. The mother's page, the recognition scene, the warm light ahead, the whispered pages — roll credits, wipe tears, go home. But the maze doesn't do endings. I've said that. I've said it so many times I'm boring myself with it, and yet here I am, walking a corridor in Level Seven that was supposed to be final, and the corridor keeps going.

The pages on the walls continued, mine and my mother's handwriting threaded together, but the density shifted. More of hers. Fewer of mine. As if I were walking into a part of the maze she'd built and I'd only occasionally visited.
