Chapter 12

Chapter 12 — The Decision

Nathan says yes to Miles's invitation and walks with him through the city to his apartment on Calhoun Street. The journey becomes a catalogue of small, accumulating intimacies—Miles's hand at the small of Nathan's back, the purchase of wine, Nathan's confession that he's thought about this before. Inside the apartment, Miles's space reveals him in ways Nathan has only inferred across nine loops. They talk in low light, the conversation stripped of pretense, until Miles asks what Nathan wants and Nathan answers without qualification for the first time. The chapter ends with Nathan stepping into Miles's bedroom, choosing to cross the threshold he has refused for nine mornings.

Just walked—Miles's hand dropping from Nathan's jaw to his side, then finding Nathan's hand, fingers lacing together with a certainty that had no memory of the eight times this gesture had been declined and the one time it hadn't. The narrow street opened onto a wider avenue, and the afternoon light fell flat and grey across storefronts and parked cars and the ordinary machinery of a city that didn't know it was repeating.

Not the jolt of the first time. Something deeper. A recognition that ran through muscle and bone and settled in the soles of his feet, as if the ground under him had shifted to accommodate a new center of gravity.
