Chapter 11
Chapter 11
Nathan wakes to October 14th for the ninth time and realizes he is completely in love with Miles. He finds him at Mott & Vine and tries to sustain a normal morning, but the accumulated weight of loving someone who forgets everything begins to fracture his composure. The easy conversation curdles as Nathan's grief bleeds through—too quiet in the wrong moments, too present in ways Miles cannot explain. Miles's perceptiveness turns the coffee into an interrogation Nathan can't escape, each question landing closer to truths Nathan cannot share without sounding insane. They walk the waterfront, and the asymmetry sharpens: Nathan knows Miles's drink order, his stories, his rhythms, while Miles sees a man who looks at him like he's already been lost. By afternoon, sitting together on the bench above the harbor, Nathan understands that the loop has become its own kind of grief—not the loss of a single day, but the loss of every day that preceded it. Miles invites Nathan home again. This time Nathan doesn't refuse or defer. He says yes—and means it.
The alarm went off at 6:15.
Nathan lay still. The ceiling was the same ceiling. The bed was the same bed. The thin grey light pressing through the curtain was the same thin grey light that had pressed through the curtain eight times before, and would press through it again tomorrow, because tomorrow was today and today was October 14th.
His phone buzzed against the nightstand. He didn't have to look. But he looked anyway—the way a tongue finds the sore tooth, the way a hand checks the lock twice.
