Mark felt like he was wading through a swamp of regret. The air in the taxi, thick with the scent of stale air freshener and his own anxiety, did little to soothe his frayed nerves. He’d agreed to this, hadn't he? Blind date. His friend, bless his well-meaning, utterly clueless heart, had insisted. “You need to get out there, Mark,” he’d chirped, the words echoing in Mark’s mind like a particularly annoying jingle. “It’s been years. You deserve some fun.”

The taxi pulled up to “The Gilded Spoon,” a restaurant he’d only ever seen in glossy magazines, the kind of place where the menus had more footnotes than actual food items. He paid the driver, his hand trembling slightly, and stepped out onto the pavement. The building glowed with an inviting warmth, a stark contrast to the icy dread pooling in his stomach. He smoothed down his shirt for the tenth time, a futile gesture against the tide of his discomfiture. This was it. The point of no return.
